Ingredients:

  • For the dough:
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 tsp sugar
    • 1 tsp baking powder
    • 3/4 cup milk
    • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • For the filling:
    • 12-15 slices of ham
    • 2 cups shredded mozzarella or Gruyère cheese
    • Optional: 1/2 cup cream cheese or ricotta (for extra creaminess)
    • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard (optional, for flavor)
  • For the topping:
    • 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)
    • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder.
    • Add milk and melted butter to the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover with a towel and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. Roll Out the Dough:
    • Roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick.
  3. Add the Filling:
    • Spread Dijon mustard or cream cheese evenly over the dough (optional).
    • Arrange the ham slices evenly across the dough.
    • Sprinkle shredded cheese over the ham, covering it evenly.
  4. Roll and Shape:
    • Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other, forming a log shape.
    • Place the roll in a greased baking dish seam-side down.
  5. Prepare for Baking:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Brush the roll with the beaten egg and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
  6. Bake:
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on top.
    • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing.
  7. Serve:
    • Slice the roulade into portions and serve warm. It pairs perfectly with a side salad or dipping sauces like marinara or garlic aioli.
