Homemade Pita Bread Recipe

 

 

 

Ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 cups (450g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups (300ml) warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
    • Add the warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic (or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes).
  2. Let the Dough Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Pitas:
    • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking sheet or pizza stone in the oven to heat.
    • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
    • Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten it into a round disc about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) thick.
  4. Bake the Pitas:
    • Carefully place the dough discs onto the preheated baking sheet or stone.
    • Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the pitas puff up and are lightly golden on top.
    • Remove the pitas from the oven and cover them with a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve warm with dips like hummus, tzatziki, or use as a wrap for sandwiches.
