- For the Gratin:
- 4-5 large potatoes, peeled
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or a mix of your favorite melting cheeses)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- For the Topping:
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional for extra crunch)
Instructions:
- Preheat and Prepare:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a baking dish with a little butter or non-stick spray.
- Grate and Mix Potatoes:
- Grate the potatoes using a coarse grater and place them in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
- Layer the Potatoes:
- Place a layer of grated potato mixture in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle a layer of shredded cheese over the potatoes.
- Repeat the layers until all the potato mixture and cheese are used up, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.
- Add Cream and Toppings:
- Pour the heavy cream evenly over the layered potatoes and cheese.
- If using breadcrumbs, mix them with the remaining 1/2 cup of cheese and sprinkle this on top for a crunchy finish.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Let the gratin cool slightly before serving to allow it to set, making it easier to slice.
- Serve warm as a hearty side dish to meats or as a satisfying vegetarian main course.
