Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy Recipe
Ingredients
- For the patties:
- 1 pound (450g) ground beef
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons oil (for frying)
- For the mushroom gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional garnish:
- Fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Make the patties:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties.
- Cook the patties:
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. (They don’t need to be fully cooked as they will finish cooking in the gravy.)
- Make the gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Add the mushrooms (if using) and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking to combine. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it thicken slightly.
- Simmer the patties in gravy:
- Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet.
- Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
- Serve:
- Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Tips:
- Make ahead: Both the patties and gravy can be prepared in advance and reheated for an easy meal.
- Customize: Add herbs like thyme or rosemary to the gravy for extra flavor.
This hearty dish is a perfect comfort food for family dinners or a special weekend meal. Enjoy!
