Ingredients:

  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Spaghetti:
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
    • Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente.
    • Drain and set aside, reserving some pasta water for adjusting the sauce consistency later if needed.
  2. Make the Meat Sauce:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the onion and garlic, and sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, basil, and oregano. Bring to a simmer.
    • Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer gently for 20-30 minutes to let the flavors meld together. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Combine and Serve:
    • Toss the cooked spaghetti with the meat sauce, adding a bit of reserved pasta water if the sauce is too thick.
    • Serve hot, sprinkled with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
