Homemade Baguettes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Boiling Solution:

  • 4 quarts water
  • 1/4 cup baking soda

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until the dough comes together.
    • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Dough:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into 3 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a long baguette by flattening the dough into a rectangle and rolling it tightly. Place the baguettes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cover with a damp cloth. Let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  5. Prepare the Boiling Solution:
    • In a large pot, bring the water and baking soda to a boil.
  6. Boil the Baguettes:
    • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
    • Carefully lower each baguette into the boiling water and boil for about 30 seconds on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place them back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Score and Bake:
    • Using a sharp knife, make several diagonal slashes on the tops of the baguettes.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the baguettes are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the baguettes to cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy warm with butter or your favorite spread.

These homemade baguettes will have a slightly different texture due to the boiling step, making them unique and delicious. Enjoy your baking!
