Cheesy Baked Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

 

 

 

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 8 slices of thick bread (such as brioche or sourdough)
  • 8 slices of ham (smoked or deli-style)
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese, Gruyère, or mozzarella
  • 1 cup (100g) grated cheese (for topping, cheddar or Gruyère)
  • 4 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional for flavor)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream or whole milk

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sandwiches:
    • Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Optionally, mix mayonnaise and Dijon mustard and spread it on the other side.
    • Place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese between two slices of bread, butter side facing out.
  2. Top with Cheese:
    • Arrange the sandwiches on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
    • Brush the tops with a small amount of heavy cream or milk to help the cheese melt and turn golden.
    • Sprinkle generously with the grated cheese.
  3. Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Bake the sandwiches for 10–12 minutes or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  4. Serve:
    • Remove the sandwiches from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm for a gooey, cheesy delight.

Tips:

  • Use brioche or a thick, rustic bread for a richer flavor and texture.
  • Add a sprinkle of black pepper, paprika, or dried herbs on top for extra flavor.
  • Serve with a green salad or tomato soup for a complete meal.
