Cheesy Baked Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
Ingredients (serves 4):
- 8 slices of thick bread (such as brioche or sourdough)
- 8 slices of ham (smoked or deli-style)
- 8 slices of Swiss cheese, Gruyère, or mozzarella
- 1 cup (100g) grated cheese (for topping, cheddar or Gruyère)
- 4 tablespoons butter (softened)
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional for flavor)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream or whole milk
Instructions:
- Prepare the Sandwiches:
- Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Optionally, mix mayonnaise and Dijon mustard and spread it on the other side.
- Place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese between two slices of bread, butter side facing out.
- Top with Cheese:
- Arrange the sandwiches on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Brush the tops with a small amount of heavy cream or milk to help the cheese melt and turn golden.
- Sprinkle generously with the grated cheese.
- Bake:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Bake the sandwiches for 10–12 minutes or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
- Serve:
- Remove the sandwiches from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm for a gooey, cheesy delight.
Tips:
- Use brioche or a thick, rustic bread for a richer flavor and texture.
- Add a sprinkle of black pepper, paprika, or dried herbs on top for extra flavor.
- Serve with a green salad or tomato soup for a complete meal.
