Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (Gruyère, cheddar, or a mix)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for greasing the dish)
  • Fresh chives or parsley (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Grease a baking dish or ramekins with butter.
  2. Prepare the Cream Mixture:
    • In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer and then remove from heat.
  3. Assemble the Dish:
    • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish, slightly overlapping them.
    • Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
    • Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and shredded cheese.
    • Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
  4. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Let the gratin cool for a few minutes before garnishing with fresh chives or parsley.
    • Serve as a side dish or a hearty main course.
