Crispy Fried Chicken Drumsticks
Ingredients:
- 12 chicken drumsticks
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons hot sauce (optional for spice)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for extra heat)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut)
Instructions:
- Marinate the Chicken:
- In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk with the hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Add the chicken drumsticks, ensuring they are fully submerged in the buttermilk mixture.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results. This process helps tenderize the meat and infuses it with flavor.
- Prepare the Flour Mixture:
- In another large bowl, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
- Dredge the Chicken:
- Remove the chicken from the buttermilk and let excess drip off.
- Dredge each drumstick in the flour mixture until well coated. For extra crispiness, dip the floured drumsticks back into the buttermilk and then into the flour again.
- Fry the Chicken:
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). You need enough oil to cover the drumsticks.
- Fry the drumsticks in batches to avoid crowding, which can lower the oil temperature and lead to less crispy chicken.
- Cook each batch for about 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C).
- Drain and Serve:
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the drumsticks from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauces or sides like coleslaw or potato salad.
Tips:
- Marinating Time: The longer the chicken marinates in the buttermilk, the more flavorful and tender it will be.
- Maintaining Oil Temperature: Keep an eye on your oil temperature to ensure it stays around 350°F (175°C) for the best results.
- Safety First: Always be cautious when working with hot oil to prevent splashes and burns.
These crispy fried chicken drumsticks are a crowd-pleaser, perfect for gatherings, picnics, or a comforting family dinner. Enjoy your cooking and the delicious results!
