Hamburger Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Hamburger Gravy:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Mashed Potatoes:
    • In a large pot, cover the potatoes with water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
    • Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper, and mash until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste. Keep warm.
  2. Prepare the Hamburger Gravy:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
    • Add onion and garlic to the beef and cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
    • Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let it thicken, stirring occasionally.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and thyme (if using).
    • Reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
  3. Serve:
    • Spoon the mashed potatoes onto plates and top with the hamburger gravy.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Enjoy this comforting and satisfying dish that’s perfect for a family meal. Let me know if you need any variations or additional tips!
