Hamburger Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients:
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Hamburger Gravy:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Make the Mashed Potatoes:
- In a large pot, cover the potatoes with water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper, and mash until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste. Keep warm.
- Prepare the Hamburger Gravy:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
- Add onion and garlic to the beef and cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let it thicken, stirring occasionally.
- Season with salt, pepper, and thyme (if using).
- Reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
- Serve:
- Spoon the mashed potatoes onto plates and top with the hamburger gravy.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.
