Homemade Berry Jam

Ingredients

  • 4 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.)

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

  • 1 packet fruit pectin (optional, for extra thickness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the berries: Wash the berries thoroughly. If using strawberries, hull and chop them. In a large saucepan, combine all the berries.

  2. Cook the mixture: Place the berries over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes, until they begin to soften and release juice.

  3. Mash the berries: Use a potato masher or fork to mash the berries to your desired consistency. If you prefer smooth jam, you can blend the mixture briefly.

  4. Add sugar and lemon: Stir in the sugar and lemon juice, and bring the mixture to a simmer. If using pectin, follow the instructions on the packet to add it at the right time.

  5. Simmer and thicken: Let the jam cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently. It will begin to thicken as the water evaporates. To test if it’s ready, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate and tilt it—if it doesn’t run, it’s done.

  6. Cool and store: Let the jam cool for 10 minutes, then transfer it to sterilized jars. Seal tightly and refrigerate for up to 3 weeks.
