Homemade Pita Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 3 1/2 cups (450g) all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp instant yeast
- 1 1/4 cups (300ml) warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
- Add the warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic (or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes).
- Let the Dough Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Pitas:
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking sheet or pizza stone in the oven to heat.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten it into a round disc about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) thick.
- Bake the Pitas:
- Carefully place the dough discs onto the preheated baking sheet or stone.
- Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the pitas puff up and are lightly golden on top.
- Remove the pitas from the oven and cover them with a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft.
- Serve:
- Serve warm with dips like hummus, tzatziki, or use as a wrap for sandwiches.
