Orange Upside-Down Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Topping:
- 2 large oranges, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
For the Cake:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1/2 cup milk
For Dusting:
- Powdered sugar
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Topping:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and granulated sugar. Spread the mixture evenly over the bottom of the prepared cake pan.
- Arrange the orange slices over the butter and sugar mixture in an overlapping pattern. Set aside.
2. Prepare the Cake Batter:

- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract and orange zest.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the orange juice and milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
3. Bake the Cake:
- Pour the batter over the orange slices in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
4. Serve:
- Run a knife around the edges of the cake to loosen it, then invert the cake onto a serving plate.
- Let it cool completely.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
