Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

  • For the patties:
    • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
    • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 2 tablespoons oil (for frying)
  • For the mushroom gravy:
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
    • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups beef broth
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional garnish:
    • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Make the patties:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties.
  2. Cook the patties:
    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. (They don’t need to be fully cooked as they will finish cooking in the gravy.)
  3. Make the gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
    • Add the mushrooms (if using) and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
    • Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking to combine. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it thicken slightly.
  4. Simmer the patties in gravy:
    • Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet.
    • Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  5. Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Tips:

  • Make ahead: Both the patties and gravy can be prepared in advance and reheated for an easy meal.
  • Customize: Add herbs like thyme or rosemary to the gravy for extra flavor.

This hearty dish is a perfect comfort food for family dinners or a special weekend meal. Enjoy!
