Soft and Fluffy White Bread

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir to dissolve and let sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter, warm milk, and the yeast mixture. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
  4. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Loaf:
    • Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Make 3-4 diagonal slashes on the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  6. Second Rise:
    • Cover the loaf with a damp cloth and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  7. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Egg Wash:
    • Brush the risen loaf with the beaten egg to give it a shiny, golden crust.
  9. Bake the Bread:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Enjoy your homemade soft and fluffy white bread, perfect for sandwiches, toast, or simply with butter!
