Sugar-Coated Fried Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar (plus extra for coating)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1/4 cup milk (or more as needed)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Make the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
    • Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Add the milk and vanilla extract (if using) gradually, mixing until a dough forms. It should be soft but not sticky.
  2. Roll and Cut:
    • On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
    • Use a round or scalloped cookie cutter to cut out shapes. You can use a fork to press ridges into the surface for decoration.
  3. Fry the Biscuits:
    • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium heat. The oil is ready when a small piece of dough dropped in sizzles immediately.
    • Fry the dough rounds in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown on both sides (about 2-3 minutes per side).
    • Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. Coat in Sugar:
    • While the biscuits are still warm, toss them in a bowl of granulated sugar until fully coated.
  5. Serve:
    • Allow to cool slightly and serve as a sweet snack or dessert. These pair wonderfully with tea or coffee.
