Sugar-Coated Fried Biscuits
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar (plus extra for coating)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
- 1/4 cup milk (or more as needed)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
- Make the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the milk and vanilla extract (if using) gradually, mixing until a dough forms. It should be soft but not sticky.
- Roll and Cut:
- On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Use a round or scalloped cookie cutter to cut out shapes. You can use a fork to press ridges into the surface for decoration.
- Fry the Biscuits:
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium heat. The oil is ready when a small piece of dough dropped in sizzles immediately.
- Fry the dough rounds in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown on both sides (about 2-3 minutes per side).
- Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Coat in Sugar:
- While the biscuits are still warm, toss them in a bowl of granulated sugar until fully coated.
- Serve:
- Allow to cool slightly and serve as a sweet snack or dessert. These pair wonderfully with tea or coffee.
