Crumb-Topped Donuts Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Donuts:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Crumb Topping:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tbsp milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk and water until warm (about 110°F). Add the warm milk mixture and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix well.
- Add the egg and beat until smooth. Gradually stir in the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Prepare the Crumb Topping:
- In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, melted butter, cinnamon, and salt. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
- Shape and Fry the Donuts:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or a large round cutter and a small one for the center.
- Place the donuts on a lightly floured surface and let them rise for another 30 minutes until puffed.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F. Carefully add donuts to the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Prepare the Glaze:
- In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Assemble the Donuts:
- While the donuts are still warm, dip the tops into the glaze and then into the crumb topping. Let the glaze set before serving.
Enjoy your delicious homemade crumb-topped donuts!
