Beef and Macaroni (American Goulash) Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, chopped
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
- 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions:
1. Cook the Ground Beef:
- In a large skillet or pot, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
2. Add Vegetables and Garlic:
- Add the chopped onion and bell peppers to the skillet with the ground beef. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
3. Add Tomatoes and Seasoning:
- Add the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, and tomato paste to the skillet. Stir to combine.
- Pour in the beef broth and add the Italian seasoning, paprika, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
4. Simmer:
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
5. Cook the Macaroni:

- While the sauce is simmering, cook the elbow macaroni in a separate pot according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain well.
6. Combine and Cook:
- Add the cooked and drained macaroni to the skillet with the beef and tomato mixture. Stir well to combine.
- If using, stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and well incorporated.
7. Serve:
- Serve the beef and macaroni hot, garnished with additional cheese if desired.
Tips:
- For extra flavor, you can add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture.
- This dish can be made ahead and reheated; it often tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld together.
