Boiled and Baked Bread Rolls Recipe
Ingredients:
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (450g)
- 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water (240 ml, about 110°F or 45°C)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
For Boiling:
- 8 cups water
- 2 tablespoons baking soda (for a shiny crust)
For Brushing:
- 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
- Gradually add the warm water and oil. Mix to form a rough dough.
- Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
2. Shape the Rolls:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions.
- Roll each portion into an oval or log shape to resemble mini baguettes.
- Place the shaped rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover them with a damp towel and let them rest for 15 minutes.
3. Boil the Rolls:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil.
- Add baking soda to the boiling water (it may bubble).
- Gently drop 2-3 rolls into the boiling water and boil for 30 seconds per side.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the rolls and place them back on the baking sheet.
4. Bake:
- Brush the tops of the boiled rolls with egg wash.
- Using a sharp knife or blade, score the tops of the rolls with a few diagonal cuts.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
Tips:
- Boiling with baking soda gives the bread a chewy crust and beautiful shine.
- Brush with melted butter after baking for a softer texture.
- These rolls pair perfectly with soups, stews, or as sandwich bread.
