Caramel Flan Recipe
Ingredients:
- For the caramel:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- For the custard:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Prepare the Caramel:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture turns a deep golden brown. This will take about 8-10 minutes.
- Quickly pour the caramel into a 9-inch round cake pan, tilting the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
- Prepare the Custard:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the cake pan.
- Bake the Flan:
- Place the cake pan inside a larger baking dish. Fill the larger dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cake pan. This creates a water bath to ensure even baking.
- Carefully transfer the baking dish to the preheated oven. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve:
- Remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Then, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan to loosen it. Invert a serving plate over the pan and flip it to release the flan onto the plate. The caramel will flow over the top and sides of the custard.
