Cheesy Meat Roll with Herbs
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/4 cup ice water
For the Filling:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
- 1/2 cup bell peppers, finely chopped
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (or your favorite herbs)
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
For the Topping:
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
- Form the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the onion and garlic, and sauté until softened.
- Add the ground meat and cook until browned.
- Stir in the bell peppers and cook for a few more minutes.
- Season with salt, black pepper, dried herbs, and paprika.
- Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
- Once cooled, mix in the shredded cheese.
- Assemble the Meat Roll:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a large rectangle.
- Spread the meat filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Carefully roll up the dough from one long side, like a jelly roll.
- Place the roll seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake the Meat Roll:
- Brush the top of the roll with the beaten egg.
- Sprinkle with shredded cheese and chopped parsley.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve:
- Let the meat roll cool slightly before slicing.
- Serve warm, with your favorite dipping sauce if desired.
