For the Pastry:
- 1 package of puff pastry sheets, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)
For the Custard Filling:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
For Garnish:
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
- Whipped cream, optional
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
- Prepare the Custard:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually whisk in the milk.
- Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.
- Once thickened, remove from heat.
- In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
- Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat, add the butter and vanilla extract, and stir until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Assemble the Pastry:
- Roll out one sheet of puff pastry and place it in the bottom of your greased baking dish, making sure the pastry reaches up the sides.
- Pour the slightly cooled custard filling over the pastry.
- Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it on top of the custard, pressing the edges to seal.
- Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve:
- Allow the pastry to cool slightly before slicing.
- Dust with powdered sugar and top with a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
This dessert combines the crispiness of puff pastry with a smooth, creamy custard filling, making it a delightful treat for any occasion. Enjoy
