Creamy Custard-Filled Pastry

 

 

Ingredients:

For the Pastry:

  • 1 package of puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)

For the Custard Filling:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

For Garnish:

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Whipped cream, optional

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Prepare the Custard:
    • In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Gradually whisk in the milk.
    • Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.
    • Once thickened, remove from heat.
    • In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
    • Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
    • Remove from heat, add the butter and vanilla extract, and stir until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Assemble the Pastry:
    • Roll out one sheet of puff pastry and place it in the bottom of your greased baking dish, making sure the pastry reaches up the sides.
    • Pour the slightly cooled custard filling over the pastry.
    • Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it on top of the custard, pressing the edges to seal.
    • Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  5. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the pastry to cool slightly before slicing.
    • Dust with powdered sugar and top with a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
