  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110-115°F)
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110-115°F)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, water, and butter until the butter mostly melts. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients.
  • Add the eggs and mix until smooth. Gradually stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.

2. Knead the Dough:

  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

3. Shape the Bread:

  • Punch down the dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into four equal parts.
  • Roll each part into a long rope, about 18 inches long. Lay the ropes out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and pinch them together at one end.
  • Braid the ropes together tightly and form into a circle, pinching ends together to seal.

4. Proof the Shaped Dough:

  • Cover the braided dough with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm place until puffed, about 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

5. Bake the Bread:

  • Brush the dough with egg wash to give it a shiny, golden finish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.

6. Cool and Serve:

  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
