Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 3 1/4 cups (400g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) warm milk (around 110°F/45°C)
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup (120g) sweet or savory filling (e.g., chocolate spread, jam, cheese, or spiced meat)

For the Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp milk

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
    • Add the warm milk, softened butter, and egg, mixing until a soft dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 6–8 minutes.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • If using sweet fillings like chocolate spread or jam, ensure it is thick to avoid leaking. For savory fillings like spiced meat or cheese, prepare and cool it beforehand.
  3. Shape the Bread:
    • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8–10 equal portions.
    • Flatten each portion into a disc and place a spoonful of filling in the center.
    • Pinch the edges together to seal the filling inside, forming a ball.
    • Arrange the filled dough balls seam-side down in a greased or parchment-lined round baking dish, placing one ball in the center and the others around it to form a flower shape.
  4. Second Rise:
    • Cover the shaped bread and let it rise for another 30–40 minutes.
  5. Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Brush the bread with the egg wash for a golden crust.
    • Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve:
    • Let the bread cool slightly before serving. It can be pulled apart for sharing or sliced for individual portions.
