Grilled Steak with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Herb Butter Sauce

Ingredients:

For the Steak:

  • 4 small steaks (like filet mignon or sirloin)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary or thyme, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for finishing)

For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large potatoes (like Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream or milk (adjust for desired creaminess)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

For Sauce (Optional):

  • ½ cup beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce (for flavor)
  • ½ teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

Instructions:

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Cook the Potatoes:
    • Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender.
  2. Prepare Garlic Butter:
    • In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant but not browned.
  3. Mash Potatoes:
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the garlic butter, heavy cream, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning as needed. Keep warm.

For the Steak:

  1. Season:
    • Rub the steaks with olive oil, minced garlic, chopped rosemary, salt, and pepper. Let them rest at room temperature for 20 minutes.
  2. Cook:
    • Heat a grill pan or skillet over high heat. Sear the steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side (for medium-rare), or longer to your preferred doneness.
  3. Add Butter:
    • Just before finishing, add a pat of butter to the pan and spoon it over the steaks to enhance flavor.
  4. Rest:
    • Let the steaks rest on a plate, loosely covered with foil, for 5 minutes.

For the Sauce (Optional):

  1. Deglaze Pan:
    • After cooking the steaks, add beef stock to the hot pan and scrape up the browned bits.
  2. Add Flavor:
    • Stir in soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce. For a thicker sauce, dissolve cornstarch in a little water and add to the pan. Simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Finish:
    • Stir in butter until glossy. Pour the sauce over the steaks.

Assemble:

  • Serve the steaks alongside the creamy mashed potatoes. Drizzle sauce over the steak and sprinkle parsley or chives for garnish.
