Homemade Sesame Seed Hamburger Buns
Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 package) active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds, for topping
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Mix until the dough comes together.
- Knead the Dough:
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment and knead on medium speed for about 5 minutes.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it to coat all sides with oil. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Buns:
- Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
- Place the balls of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between them for spreading. Gently flatten each ball with your hand.
- Second Rise:
- Cover the shaped buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, until they have puffed up.
- Prepare for Baking:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg for a shiny finish. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
- Bake:
- Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
- Cool:
- Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
Serve:
- Slice the buns horizontally and use them for your favorite burgers or sandwiches. Enjoy your homemade sesame seed hamburger buns!
