Homemade Wonton Soup:
Ingredients
For the Wontons:
- 200g (7 oz) ground pork or shrimp (or a mix)
- 2 green onions, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
- Pinch of salt and pepper
- 20-25 wonton wrappers
For the Soup:
- 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1-2 bok choy, chopped (optional)
- 1 carrot, thinly sliced (optional)
- 2 green onions, finely chopped (for garnish)
- Chili oil or chili flakes (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Wontons:
- In a bowl, mix the ground pork/shrimp, green onions, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, salt, and pepper.
- Place a small spoonful of the filling in the center of a wonton wrapper.
- Wet the edges of the wrapper with water, fold into a triangle, and press the edges to seal. You can fold the corners together for a classic wonton shape.
- Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
2. Make the Soup Base:
- In a large pot, bring the chicken or vegetable broth to a boil.
- Add soy sauce, sesame oil, and any vegetables (bok choy, carrots, etc.) you’re using.
- Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
3. Cook the Wontons:
- Gently add the wontons to the boiling soup.
- Let them cook for 3-5 minutes, or until they float to the top (this means they’re done).
4. Serve:
- Ladle the soup into bowls, making sure to include wontons and vegetables.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and a drizzle of chili oil, if desired.
Tips:
- You can freeze uncooked wontons for future use.
- Customize the filling by adding mushrooms, water chestnuts, or other ingredients you enjoy.
- Pair with a side of steamed rice or spring rolls for a complete meal.
