Ingredients

For the Wontons:

  • 200g (7 oz) ground pork or shrimp (or a mix)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • Pinch of salt and pepper
  • 20-25 wonton wrappers

For the Soup:

  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1-2 bok choy, chopped (optional)
  • 1 carrot, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped (for garnish)
  • Chili oil or chili flakes (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Wontons:

  • In a bowl, mix the ground pork/shrimp, green onions, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, salt, and pepper.
  • Place a small spoonful of the filling in the center of a wonton wrapper.
  • Wet the edges of the wrapper with water, fold into a triangle, and press the edges to seal. You can fold the corners together for a classic wonton shape.
  • Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

2. Make the Soup Base:

  • In a large pot, bring the chicken or vegetable broth to a boil.
  • Add soy sauce, sesame oil, and any vegetables (bok choy, carrots, etc.) you’re using.
  • Simmer for 5-7 minutes.

3. Cook the Wontons:

  • Gently add the wontons to the boiling soup.
  • Let them cook for 3-5 minutes, or until they float to the top (this means they’re done).

4. Serve:

  • Ladle the soup into bowls, making sure to include wontons and vegetables.
  • Garnish with chopped green onions and a drizzle of chili oil, if desired.

Tips:

  • You can freeze uncooked wontons for future use.
  • Customize the filling by adding mushrooms, water chestnuts, or other ingredients you enjoy.
  • Pair with a side of steamed rice or spring rolls for a complete meal.
