Parker House Rolls
Ingredients:
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, plus more for brushing
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 package active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 large egg
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk, water, and 1/4 cup of butter until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm (about 110°F).
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, and yeast. Add the warm milk mixture and stir until combined. Cover the bowl and let it rest for 15 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and foamy.
- Mix the Dough:
- Add the salt, egg, and remaining flour (2 cups) to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms. You can use a stand mixer with a dough hook or mix by hand.
- Knead the Dough:
- If using a stand mixer, knead on medium speed for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If kneading by hand, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Rolls:
- Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 20-24 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a greased baking sheet or in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll.
- Second Rise:
- Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the Rolls:
- Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
- Brush with Butter:
- Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush them with melted butter for a soft and shiny finish.
- Serve:
- Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. These rolls are perfect for any meal, especially holiday dinners.
