Patty Melt Recipe

 

Ingredients:

For the Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to help with caramelization)

For the Sandwich:

  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter (for grilling the sandwiches)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Patties:
    • In a bowl, mix the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until just combined. Do not overmix.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into thin patties roughly the size of the bread slices.
    • Cook the patties in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are cooked to your desired level of doneness. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In the same skillet, add the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. If desired, add the sugar to help with the caramelization process.
    • Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
    • On the non-buttered side of 4 slices, place a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by a cooked beef patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side facing out.
  4. Grill the Sandwiches:
    • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Place the assembled sandwiches on the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.
  5. Serve:
    • Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool slightly before slicing in half.
    • Serve warm with your favorite side of chips or pickles.
