Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients

  • For the potatoes:
    • 2 pounds (approximately 6 medium) Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch thick)
    • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced (optional, for added flavor)
  • For the creamy sauce:
    • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups whole milk (warm)
    • 1 cup heavy cream (for extra richness)
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
    • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or Gruyère cheese (optional, for a cheesy version)
  • For the topping:
    • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • Paprika (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven:
    • Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similar oven-safe dish with butter or non-stick spray. This ensures easy removal of the finished dish and enhances flavor.
  2. Prepare the potatoes:
    • Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly and evenly, about 1/8-inch thick. A mandoline slicer is ideal for this, as it creates uniform slices that cook evenly. If you’re using an onion, slice it thinly as well and set aside.
  3. Make the creamy sauce:
    • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once fully melted, whisk in the flour, cooking for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux. This step removes the raw flour taste and thickens the sauce.
    • Gradually pour in the warm milk and cream, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Add the minced garlic, nutmeg, salt, and pepper, continuing to whisk until the sauce thickens and bubbles slightly (about 5-7 minutes).
    • For a cheesy version, stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar or Gruyère cheese until melted and smooth.
  4. Assemble the dish:
    • Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish. If using onions, scatter a layer of onion slices over the potatoes.
    • Pour half of the creamy sauce over the first layer, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions (if using), and sauce, ensuring the top layer is fully coated.
  5. Add the topping:
    • Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese evenly over the top layer. For added color and a touch of smoky flavor, dust the top with a light layer of paprika.
  6. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent over-browning) and bake for 45 minutes. Afterward, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a knife and the top is golden and bubbling.
  7. Cool and serve:
    • Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to set slightly, making it easier to serve.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pair these scalloped potatoes with roasted meats such as beef, chicken, or lamb for a hearty meal.
  • Serve alongside a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables to balance the richness of the dish

Tips and Variations

  • Add herbs: Incorporate fresh thyme or rosemary into the sauce for an aromatic twist.
  • Make it a main course: Layer in cooked ham, bacon, or sautéed mushrooms between the potato layers for a complete meal.
  • Customize the cheese: Experiment with different cheeses like Fontina, Parmesan, or a mix for unique flavors.

This dish is a perfect blend of creamy textures and savory flavors, making it a family favorite and a showstopper for any occasion. Enjoy!
