Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 3/4 cup warm water (you may need a little more or less)
  • Additional oil or melted butter for cooking and brushing

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Add the oil or melted butter and mix until the mixture is crumbly.
    • Gradually add the warm water and mix until a soft dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
    • Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Shape the Flatbreads:
    • Divide the dough into equal portions (about 6-8 balls, depending on the size of the flatbreads you want).
    • Roll each ball into a thin circle using a rolling pin, about 1/8 inch thick.
    • Brush the surface of the rolled dough with a little oil or melted butter.
  3. Create Layers:
    • Fold the rolled dough in half, then in half again to form a triangle.
    • Roll out the triangle again into a flat circle or oval shape, maintaining the layered structure.
  4. Cook the Flatbreads:
    • Heat a skillet or pan over medium heat.
    • Place the rolled flatbread onto the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on one side until bubbles form and it turns golden brown.
    • Flip the flatbread and cook the other side, brushing with oil or butter as needed.
    • Press gently with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
  5. Serve:
    • Once cooked, remove the flatbread from the skillet and keep it warm in a clean cloth.
    • Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
  6. Enjoy:
    • Serve the flatbreads warm with your favorite dips, curries, or fillings.

These flatbreads are versatile and can be enjoyed with a variety of dishes or even on their own with some butter or yogurt.
