Ingredients:

  • For the Dough:
    • 3 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
    • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/4 cup water (as needed for consistency)
  • For Frying:
    • Vegetable oil for frying
  • For Coating:
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Dough:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
    • Add the softened butter, egg, sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture.
    • Gradually add flour and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes in a stand mixer until the dough is smooth and elastic.
    • Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  2. Shape the Doughnuts:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces (about 12–16).
    • Roll each piece into a rope (about 8–10 inches long), then twist two ropes together to form the signature shape. Pinch the ends to seal.
    • Place the twisted doughnuts on a tray lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes.
  3. Fry the Doughnuts:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
    • Fry the doughnuts in batches, 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
    • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Coat with Sugar:
    • While still warm, roll the doughnuts in granulated sugar or a cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  5. Serve:
    • Enjoy the doughnuts fresh and warm!
