Twisted Sugar Doughnuts
Ingredients:
- For the Dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup water (as needed for consistency)
- For Frying:
- Vegetable oil for frying
- For Coating:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions:
- Make the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- Add the softened butter, egg, sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture.
- Gradually add flour and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes in a stand mixer until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the Doughnuts:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces (about 12–16).
- Roll each piece into a rope (about 8–10 inches long), then twist two ropes together to form the signature shape. Pinch the ends to seal.
- Place the twisted doughnuts on a tray lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes.
- Fry the Doughnuts:
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the doughnuts in batches, 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Coat with Sugar:
- While still warm, roll the doughnuts in granulated sugar or a cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Serve:
- Enjoy the doughnuts fresh and warm!
