Caramelized Onions
Ingredients:
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, helps with caramelization)
- 1/4 cup water (optional, to deglaze the pan)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Onions:
- Peel the onions and slice them thinly into half-moons.
- Heat the Pan:
- In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted.
- Cook the Onions:
- Add the sliced onions to the pan, stirring to coat them in the oil and butter mixture.
- Sprinkle with salt and, if using, the sugar. The sugar helps to speed up the caramelization process.
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 30-40 minutes. Lower the heat to medium-low if the onions start to brown too quickly. The goal is to slowly caramelize the onions, not burn them.
- If the onions start sticking to the pan or if you want to speed up the process, add a small amount of water (a tablespoon at a time) to deglaze the pan. Stir well each time you add water.
- Finish and Serve:
- Continue cooking until the onions are deep golden brown and have reduced significantly in volume.
- Remove from heat and use immediately, or let cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Uses for Caramelized Onions:
- Top burgers, steaks, or sandwiches
- Add to pasta dishes
- Mix into soups or stews
- Serve as a side dish or topping for pizzas
Caramelized onions add a sweet, rich flavor to a variety of dishes and are a great way to elevate simple ingredients. Enjoy!
