Caramelized Onions

Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, helps with caramelization)
  • 1/4 cup water (optional, to deglaze the pan)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Onions:
    • Peel the onions and slice them thinly into half-moons.
  2. Heat the Pan:
    • In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted.
  3. Cook the Onions:
    • Add the sliced onions to the pan, stirring to coat them in the oil and butter mixture.
    • Sprinkle with salt and, if using, the sugar. The sugar helps to speed up the caramelization process.
  4. Caramelize the Onions:
    • Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 30-40 minutes. Lower the heat to medium-low if the onions start to brown too quickly. The goal is to slowly caramelize the onions, not burn them.
    • If the onions start sticking to the pan or if you want to speed up the process, add a small amount of water (a tablespoon at a time) to deglaze the pan. Stir well each time you add water.
  5. Finish and Serve:
    • Continue cooking until the onions are deep golden brown and have reduced significantly in volume.
    • Remove from heat and use immediately, or let cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Uses for Caramelized Onions:

  • Top burgers, steaks, or sandwiches
  • Add to pasta dishes
  • Mix into soups or stews
  • Serve as a side dish or topping for pizzas

Caramelized onions add a sweet, rich flavor to a variety of dishes and are a great way to elevate simple ingredients. Enjoy!
