Potato Gratin Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds (900g) potatoes, preferably Yukon Gold or Russet, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) heavy cream
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup (100g) grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh chives or parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish (about 9×13 inches) with butter.
  2. Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Peel and thinly slice the potatoes using a sharp knife or a mandoline for even slices.
  3. Make the Cream Mixture:
    • In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat until the mixture is warm and well combined, but do not let it boil.
  4. Layer the Potatoes:
    • Arrange a layer of the sliced potatoes at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Pour a little of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with a small amount of Gruyère cheese.
  5. Continue Layering:
    • Repeat the layering process until all the potatoes, cream mixture, and Gruyère cheese are used up. Finish with a layer of cream and the remaining Gruyère cheese on top.
  6. Add Parmesan and Bake:
    • Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top layer. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  7. Remove Foil and Finish Baking:
    • After 45 minutes, remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  8. Garnish and Serve:
    • Once baked, remove the gratin from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley before serving.

Notes:

  • For extra richness, you can add a few pats of butter on top before baking.
  • Gruyère is the traditional cheese used in this dish, but you can substitute it with Swiss, Cheddar, or another melting cheese if preferred.
