Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

 

Ingredients:

  • For the Salisbury Steak:
    • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
    • 1/2 cup (50g) breadcrumbs
    • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 8 ounces (225g) mushrooms, sliced
    • 1 onion, sliced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups (480ml) beef broth
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty.
  2. Cook the Steaks:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil.
    • Add the beef patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Mushroom Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced mushrooms and onions, and sauté until they are tender and browned, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring to coat them.
    • Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the beef patties to the skillet with the mushroom gravy. Spoon the gravy over the patties and simmer for a few more minutes to heat through.
    • Serve the Salisbury steak and mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
