This simple grilled cheese sandwich is golden and crisp on the outside with a rich, gooey melted cheese center. It is a comforting classic that makes a quick lunch, easy dinner, or perfect pairing with a warm bowl of tomato soup.
Ingredients
8 slices sandwich bread
8 slices cheddar cheese
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 tablespoon mayonnaise, optional
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, optional
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Preparation Steps
Lay the bread slices on a clean work surface.
Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice. For extra crispness, mix the butter with a little mayonnaise before spreading.
Place 2 slices of cheddar cheese between two pieces of bread, keeping the buttered sides facing outward.
Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat.
Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bottoms are evenly golden.
Flip carefully and cook the other side for another 3 to 4 minutes, until crisp and deeply golden and the cheese is completely melted.
Remove from the skillet and let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute before slicing.
Serving Tip
Serve immediately with creamy tomato soup, pickles, or a simple green salad for a classic comforting meal.
